Kenneth Maynard Dowden, 79, Bloomfield, passed away at 2:35 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2005 at Union Hospital, Terre Haute.
Born July 6, 1926 in Greene County, he was the son of Charles and Freeda (Swango) Dowden.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II where he served aboard the USS Chicago Heavy Cruiser. He retired from JL Wilson Construction where he was the Vice President, Treasurer. He also worked for WL Thomas Excavating of Owensburg, In. He was a member of the Lions Club, American Legion Post #196 of Bloomfield. Former President of the Bloomfield School Board, Linton Elks Lodge, Navy Cruiser Association, former member ISU Alumni Advisory board. He completed his brothers, Elmo Dowden, term on the Greene County General Hospital Board, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Family Life Center, served Bloomfield on the town Counsel for several years. He was also co-organizer of the Little League baseball. He graduated from the Indiana State Teachers College. He was one of 9 children.
Survivors include: his children, Darhis and husband Charles Shacklee of Terre Haute, Dan and Wife Brenda Dowden of Bloomington, Stuart and Wife Rhonda Dowden of Aurora, IL; three grandchildren, Michael Shacklee of Terre Haute, Amber Howe of Bedford, Heather Mitchell of Indianapolis; four great grandchildren, Carter Howe of Bedford, Nathan Gonzalez of Tipton, Rose Moran of Indianapolis, Alex Voorhies of Bedford; two sisters, Eloise Timmons of Linton, Judy and husband Jim Miller of Bloomfield; one brother, William A. Dowden of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his Wife of 56 years Grace (Sargent) Dowden who died May 26, 2003; one son, Timothy Jay Dowden; his parents; and five brothers, Ray, Edward, Robert, Donald, and Elmo Dowden.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at Faith Christian Church, Bloomfield, with Rev. Henry Mann Jr. and Rev. Billy Ed Hostettler officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, and 1 hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.
