John Bays Allen

John Bays Allen, 93, of Bloomfield passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 30, 2026 at Glenburn Senior Living Center in Linton.

He was born on May 26, 1933 in Martin County to John T. and Ola (Bays) Allen.

He completed a 40-year career as a federal employee at NSWC Crane before retiring from the Public Works Department as a Division Manager in 1992. He returned to NSWC Crane later in 1992 first as independent contractor before eventually working for SAIC until his permanent retirement in 2013.

He was a U.S. Army veteran. He served overseas during the Korean War and then remained active in the Army Reserve until 1962.

He was an over seventy-year member of the Presbyterian Church, first in Scotland and later transferring to Bloomfield. He was an over sixty-year member of Linton Masonic Lodge, Terre Haute Scottish Rite, Terre Haute Zorah Shrine, Greene County Shrine Club, and Linton Elks. He was also a member of the Bloomfield American Legion.

John was preceded in death by his first wife, Lula McElroy Allen of 43 years on July 16, 1996 and his second wife, Betty White-Allen of 25 years on Feb. 14, 2025, his parents, his three older sisters Helen Leukhardt, Nellie Boling, and Mabel Allen; his three older brothers Carl Allen, Paul Allen, and Robert Allen.

John is survived by his children LuAnne Allen (Roy From) and John “J.B.” (Kristina) Allen both of Bloomfield; his bonus children Suzanne (Steve) Burns, Lindley (Christine) White, Dina Wood, Regina (Tracey) Smith, and Preston Harris all of Heltonville; his grandchildren Anna and Dalton Allen, Elijah Harris, Lukas White, Meredith Burns, Alexander Smith, and Lauren (Kevin) Harris. John has one surviving younger brother, Jim Allen of Washington, IN and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved cat, Caesar.

Visitation will be at Jenkins and Sons Funeral Home in Bloomfield from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday Aug. 7, 2026.

Funeral Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Greene County in Bloomfield at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026 with the Rev. Hana Elliott officiating. Public visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at a later date at Scotland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Rileys Children’s Foundation in care of the funeral home.
