James (Jim) Phillips Medina 75, of Bloomfield, passed away Wednesday morning, May 22 at home.

Born in Linton, Indiana January 22, 1949, he was the son of Juan and Ruth Medina. Jim is a U.S. Army Veteran.

Jim started his career with locomotives on the B&O public railroad. As a dispatcher he worked in many different cities. Later he became employed by NWSC Crane on the railroad, before retiring in 2005. He worked track maintenance, brakeman, conductor, and engineer. Jim loved the sound of a locomotive and knew everything about them. He changed jobs within Crane and became an Overhead Materials Handler Instructor. The standard inspection and operating procedures he wrote were adopted by the US Navy.

Jim was a true servant and volunteering was his passionate. Through the Literacy Coalition he became a volunteer for the GED program at the Greene County jail where he made lasting friendships with some of his students. Jim also served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Volunteer to ensure that every child he advocated for lived in a safe, permanent home. Jim was also an active member of the Bloomfield Lions Club.

Jim is survived by his wife Barb of 36 years, three children, Susan (Jeremy) Barber, Adam Oliphant and Betsy Myers. Four grandchildren Madi Oliphant (Sawyer Chambers), Coleman Oliphant, Ruby and Lola Myers. He loved his family dearly. Jim is also survived by his brother Pete Medina, several nieces and nephews, as well as some very special friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Sally Medina and Ruth Nell Goodpaster, and brothers Juan and Thomas Medina.

There will be a celebration of Life at the Tulip Church of God in Bloomfield, Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at 5:30 pm with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's memory to the Bloomfield Lions Club.
