James Ray McDermott, 50, of Newberry passed away on Friday, June 23, 2023.

Born August 3, 1972 in Terre Haute, he was the son of Betty McDermott.

James was a retired career firefighter and currently served as Fire Chief for the Newberry Fire Department.

Surviving relatives include: his wife, Angel Dawn (Pickett) McDermott whom he married March 15, 2010; his children, Chelsea McDermott (James Hickner), Samantha McKinnon (Chris Beadles) and Brittany Rawley (Cory); siblings, Victoria Baker (Aaron) and George Kanzler; his grandchildren, Bryson, Corbin, Kendall, Texas and Amelia on the way; mother-in-law, Barbara Pickett; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Kim Pickett; and several nephews and longtime friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty McDermott and his biological mother, Jeanette Armitage.

A Memorial service will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm on Saturday at the funeral home.

The family asks that all memorial contributions be made to Jenkins Funeral Home to help defray the costs of final expenses.
