Irene Gretchen Wentz Artman passed away on Monday afternoon, October 11, 2010 at Meadow Manor East Nursing Home. She was born November 14, 1915 in New Ulm, Minnesota to Charles Sylvester Wentz and Alberta Marie Small. Irene was a beauty operator in LaSueur, Minnesota for 8 years and then joined the Womens' Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) on January 27, 1943. After basic training she was sent to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland where she eventually became a dispatcher in the motor pool. It was there she met Walter Artman. They were married November 4, 1944 in Baltimore Maryland. She was discharged from the WAC (Womens' Army Corps – Regular Army) on November 17, 1945. Walter and Irene lived near New Ulm where he farmed, then moved to Indianapolis in 1957 where he managed a service station and she worked as a bookkeeper for Fort Harrison. They then moved to Bloomfield, IN and Terre Haute. Walter died on July 17, 2001 in Terre Haute. Her parents died in 1926 and 1983. Irene was a lifelong member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was a wonderful singer and very active in church service activities. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Margaret Artman of Sidell. Illinois and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be at 12:00 PM at Valhalla Memory Gardens in Bloomington, Saturday, October 16. Jenkins and Sons Funeral Home of Bloomfield is handling the arrangements.
