Freida F. Uland, 94, of Bloomfield passed away Thursday April 5, 2012 at Greene County General Hospital in Linton.
Born January 23, 1918 in Richland township in Bloomfield, she was the daughter of James Emery Sparks, Sr. and Bessie Hazel (Pearson) Sparks.
Freida was a graduate of Bloomfield High School in 1936 and received her BS and MS degrees from Indiana University in 1940 and 1972 respectively.
At Indiana University she was a member of Omicron Delta and Delta Pi Epsilon, the Teachers Club and the English Club and later the Emeritus Club, she was on the committee for higher education.
She taught Business subjects and English for one year at Freedom, Indiana and 39 years at Bloomfield.
At Bloomfield High School she established the Future Business Leaders of America Club, a national organization which was instrumental in Bringing community business persons and students together, she sponsored career days and started sending students to journalism institution to help train for yearbook work and the school paper; helped students in getting jobs; took students from speech class to contests; sponsored junior and senior classes and the Honor Society and worked with proms.
She was on the original committee that established the North Central Accreditation in 1943-44 for Bloomfield High School; Chaired the committee that established the Classroom Teachers Association at Bloomfield, was active including president of the Greene County Retired Teachers Association and was a member of the State and National Teachers Organizations.
Freida was a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Surviving relatives include her children; Beth Ann (Uland) Lopez of Spokane, Washington; James Scott Uland of Zionsville, Indiana and Jonas Sparks Uland of Linton, Indiana.She has seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one brother James Emery Sparks, Jr.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Jonas Anderson Uland on July 13, 1999, one brother Jackie Sparks, five sisters; Betty Ingalls, Dorothy Fiscus, Ava Ockerman, Nina Eller-Foster and Lena Vira Mann, and her parents.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. on Monday and 9 A.M. Tuesday until the hour of service at Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield.
Services will be held at 10 A.M. on Tuesday at Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Kevin Wrigley officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery in Bloomfield.
