Elmer P. Childers, 90, of Bloomfield, passed away at 6:41 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Kindred Hospital South in Greenwood.
Born October 5, 1922 in Avoca, Indiana, he was the son of Abijah and Gertrude (Bird) Childers.
He was a partner in Childers Brothers Recreation Hall in Bloomfield, owned a laundromat in Worthington and was a coin dealer. He served his country in World War II with the United States Army where he was a POW and a Purple Heart recipient. He was a charter member of the Gosport VFW, a member of the American Legion Post 196 in Bloomfield and the Bloomfield United Methodist Church.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Dorothy Childers of Bloomfield; daughters, Tondra Allen (Dave) of Summerville, South Carolina and Marjorie Hamlin (Daniel) of Bloomfield; sons, Steven Childers of Bloomfield and Steve Summers (Laura) of Martinsville; one son-in-law, Gene Meek of Bloomfield; his brothers, Lowell Childers of Bloomfield and Jack Childers of North Carolina; one sister, Viola Hall of Gosport; fifteen grandchildren, thirty-one great, grandchildren and four great, great, grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda (Burger) Childers, one daughter, Marilyn Meek, brothers, Henry, Denver, Robert and Charles Childers and his parents.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home in Bloomfield, with Rev. Kevin Wrigley officiating. Interment will follow in Gosport cemetery.
Public visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday and 1 hour prior to services Saturday at the Funeral Home.
