Obituary

Deloris Eloise Ausman (Cone) Newkirk, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, passed away on January 27, 2025 at 10:05 p.m. at the age of 94. Deloris was born on November 2, 1930 in the country outside of Bloomfield, Indiana to Owen Edgar and Mary (Sensney) Ausman. She grew up in Lyons, Indiana with her siblings, John Robert Sensney, Charles Wesley Ausman, Perry Lee Ausman and Owen Richard Ausman. Deloris attended Lyons High School. She was "Mother" to 5 children, who survive her: Michael J. Cone, of Freelandville, Indiana, Jeanne A. Fields, of Franklin, Indiana, Judith N. Reynolds (Brett) of Freelandville, Indiana, John A. Newkirk, of Westphalia, Indiana and James S. Newkirk (Jeanna), of Edwardsport, Indiana. She is also survived by a brother, Perry Lee Ausman (Caroline) of Linton, Indiana, 16 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, along with Michele Daffron, of Vincennes, Indiana, a very much-loved friend. Deloris was preceded in death by her parents and 3 of her brothers, John R. Sensney of Indianapolis, Indiana, Charles W. Ausman of Battle Ground, Indiana and Owen Richard Ausman of St. Francisville, Illinois.

Deloris was a past member of the Rebekah Lodge in Edwardsport, Lifetime Member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 479 in Lyons, Indiana, Greene County Homemaker Extension Club and Marco Methodist Church.

Deloris was known for her beautiful hand crocheted lace and she also crocheted hundreds of tiny hats and booties for hospital NICUs. She overcame obstacles in her life that would have challenged a sighted person and always did her best for her children and helped everyone she could. She loved music and sang & played piano. Despite being blind since her early twenties, she was never limited by it and moved through life with a fierce confidence, living independently until Christmas Day 2024. She was truly an amazing person who will be missed.

There will be a private family viewing at 11:00 at Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield, Indiana, with public graveside services following at 12:00 on Thursday, January 30 at Prairie Chapel Cemetery on Hwy. 57, outside of Lyons, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to: Indiana Talking Book & Braille Library, Indiana State Library, 140 N.
