Gail Combs, 89, of Brazil, passed away at 12:08 p.m. Thursday, February 22, 2007 at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
Born March 17, 1917 in Greene County, he was the son of Claude and Hazel (Corwin) Combs.
He served in the United States Army in WWII and reached the rank of sergeant, he served in Austria, Italy, and Germany. He received a bronze star for meritory services from General Patton. He attended Harmony United Methodist Church, was a member of the American Legion Post #139, Masonic Lodge in Spencer #95, Scottish Rite in Terre Haute, Elks Lodge in Brazil.
When he returned home from the service, Gail worked in a feed store in Spencer, later he and his Brother Forest owned and operated the Bloomfield Block Plant, eventually opening Western Auto stores in Sullivan and Brazil.
Survivors include: one stepson, Robert Joe Arthur & wife Betty of Brazil; grandchildren, Nancy Pell & husband Dan of Brazil, Susan Arthur of Encinitias, California; great grandchildren, Jim Pell & wife Ann of Brazil, David Elder & wife Shelly of California, and Amanda Elder of California; one brother, Bert Combs & wife Virginia of Ellettsville and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary (Carmichael) Combs, whom he married June 30, 1940, his parents, and one brother Glen.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday February 24, 2007 at Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Bob Kumpf officiating. Burial will be in Grandview cemetery in Bloomfield. Bloomfield American Legion Post #196 will conduct military honors.
Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. until the hour of services Saturday at the funeral home.
The family asks that all memorial contributions be made to the Clay County Senior Citizens Center in care of Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home.
