Emerson O. Martin

Emerson O. Martin 84, of Bloomfield, passed away 10:12 p.m. Sunday, November 8, 2009 at Bloomington Hospital. Born April 16, 1925 near Gosport, Indiana, he was the son of Roy and Dora (Corns) Martin. Surviving relatives include: His wife of 63 years Jean Martin whom he married on April 25, 1946; four children, Ellen Martin Mize (Monty) of Vincennes, Jane Martin of Indianapolis, Tina Miller of Indianapolis and David Martin (Jo Ellen) of Indianapolis; one brother, Chester Martin (Betty) of Ellettsville; nine grandchildren, Rebecca Zobel (Doug), Bethany Newsom (Zach), Brian Miller (Andrea), Rachel Mize, Jordan Spaethe (Ben), Alex Miller (Brittanie), Kelsey Miller, Joshua Martin and Emily Martin; five great, grandchildren, Ava Newsom, Braden Newsom, Lillian Spaethe, Jefferick Majors III and Nicholas Emerson Zobel. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters, Minor Martin, James Martin, Katherine Vandeventer, Exie Summitt, Colleen Pickett and Maxine Franklin Emerson was a veteran of World War II in the 78th Army Division and was very proud of his service. In years past he enjoyed attending reunions with his Army buddies. He served on the front lines and earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. After the war, Emerson and Jean married, and he went on to graduate from Purdue University. He was an avid Boilermaker fan throughout his life. After college he farmed for several years. In 1961 he left farming and began working for Farmers Home Administration, retiring in 1985 as the District Director. Anyone who knew Emerson well knew that he loved to sing. As a member of the First Christian Church in Bloomfield, he sang in the choir and served as an Elder for many years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #84 in Bloomfield and the Ancient Order of Scottish Rite. Most of all Emerson enjoyed family whether immediate or extended. He spent many years researching family history and genealogy. His love, council, and guidance will be sorely missed Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 13, 2009 at First Christian Church in Bloomfield, with Rev. Dave Wilde officiating. Interment will follow in Chambersville Cemetery near Spencer, Indiana. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home in Bloomfield, and 1 hour prior to services Friday at the church. Masonic Lodge services will begin at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Choir at the First Christian Church or Riley Children's Hospital.
